UCD Biomedical Engineering Student Hannah Craddock was awarded the 2015 HRB Summer Student Scholarship for her project titled ‘Developing Pneumatic Muscles for Integration with Prosthetics using the Soft Robotics Toolkit.’ The project involves the development of a control system for the biomimetic artificial muscle using the toolkit which will assist in providing precise control of pneumatic muscle activation with the aim of integrating the muscle with patient-specific lower limb prostheses. The Soft Robotics Toolkit is an open-source initiative, developed by collaborators at the Harvard Biodesign Lab and is a collection of shared resources to enable rapid and low cost design, fabrication and control of soft robotic devices, specifically the bio-pneumatic muscle for this project.
